EPEC Lifetime Activity Modules for Grades 6-12

The goal of the Exemplary Physical Education Program Lifetime Activity Modules is to equip students with the knowledge, skill, and confidence required for basic proficiency in physical activities they can enjoy for the rest of their lives. The modules provide instruction on a variety of individual, two-person, and team activities. Selected by a stakeholder group, the lifetime activities included – and to be included – in EPEC are: aerobics, basketball, golf, personal conditioning, resistance training, soccer, softball, swimming, track and field, tennis, and volleyball.

All Lifetime Activity Modules include six major components:

  • knowledge/skill teaching
  • graphics illustrating mature skill form
  • drills that provide practice on skill objectives
  • activities that provide practice on skill objectives
  • handouts, assessments (including interest. knowledge, and skill assessments)
  • 45 detailed, sequential lessons.

Each module also includes an equipment list, weekly lesson plans, a lesson plan worksheet, resources for the activity, materials to advocate for physical education, and pictures illustrating facts and concepts.

Personal Conditioning

The nationally recognized Exemplary Physical Education Curriculum includes the Personal Conditioning Module, targeted at middle- and high-school youth. This module provides students with the knowledge, skills and motivation they need to begin a personal conditioning program, including fitness objectives such as improving aerobic fitness; knowledge of names and locations of muscles and muscle groups; strengthening exercises for the abdomen, low back and legs; and flexibility exercises for the trunk, neck, arms, shoulders, hips and low back. Students also receive instruction on the basics of conditioning, including definitions of physical fitness and cardiorespiratory endurance, injury prevention information and conditioning principles. Most of the daily personal conditioning lessons are taught in 15-minute segments at the beginning of class and are intended to act as a warm-up preceding instruction and practice in other activities (such as basketball and volleyball); however, some 40-minute lessons provide more time for instruction in personal conditioning principles or assessment of student progress on knowledge and fitness objectives. Students find it motivating to track their fitness progress and knowledge gains in portfolios, which can be either copied by the teacher or purchased separately at a low cost. Supplemental full-color 11”x17” posters are also available for purchase.

Basketball

The EPEC Basketball module, new for 2006, includes detailed instruction on the fundamentals of basketball, including descriptions of facilities and equipment, rules, and strategies, with particular emphasis on the game among the players who do not have the ball. Twelve skills are described and illustrated: dribble, chest pass, bounce pass, v-cut, layup, set shot, defense against a player with the ball, defense against a player without the ball, pivot, rebound, jump stop and setting a screen. Forty-five lessons and over 80 drills ensure student mastery of the basics of the sport. Assessments on skills, game performance, knowledge and interest are included to help students and teachers monitor student learning and provide appropriate remediation. The module is supplemented by full-color 11”x17” posters also available for purchase.

Golf

The EPEC Golf module includes instruction on pre-swing fundamentals, including grip and stance, in addition to the full swing, chip, putt and pitch. Etiquette is featured prominently throughout the module, and game performance assessments assess students’ ability to adhere to rules, ensure safety of themselves and others, and demonstrate appropriate etiquette. As with other EPEC Lifetime Activity Modules, the content of this module contains 45 detailed lessons and numerous (over 50) drills. Teaching tips throughout the lessons were provided by golf teachers and help the teacher convey the information to students using words and images they can easily grasp. Full-color 11”x17” posters are also available for purchase.

Resistance Training

The EPEC Resistance Training module enables students in grades 6-12 to develop a personalized resistance training program based on personal goals and their current fitness levels. Free-weight, weight-machine and resistance-band exercises are described in detail for each of the following muscles/muscle groups: biceps, triceps, pectorals, trapezius, deltoids, wrist flexors, wrist extensors, erector spinae, rectus abdominis, obliques, quadriceps, hamstrings, gluteus maximus, gastrocnemius and  tibialis anterior. In addition, students learn stable standing, sitting and bench positions, appropriate spotting techniques, and principles of resistance training, such as adaptation, overload and progression. The full-color 11”x17” posters (available for purchase separately) show the target muscle groups and graphics for the free-weight and resistance-band exercises.

Soccer

In EPEC Soccer, students are introduced to eight soccer skills: basic dribble, speed dribble, lofted drive, low drive, push pass, receive rolling ball, throw-in and marking. Fifty-three drills give students both the practice they need in order to develop competence in each of these skills and the opportunity to perform the skills in a game situation. Forty-five detailed lessons enable the teacher to easily provide instruction on skills and on soccer-related knowledge (such as rules, game play, and information about facilities and equipment) and progressively more challenging practice to students. This module includes several pages of information on offensive and defensive strategies. The skills are supplemented by full-color 11”x17” posters, also available for purchase.

Volleyball

The EPEC Volleyball module equips students with the knowledge and skills they need in order to choose volleyball as a lifetime activity. Forty-five lessons, 70 drills, numerous teaching tips, and assessments targeting skills, game performance, knowledge and interest form the basis of instruction. Seven volleyball skills (underhand strike, overhand strike, forearm pass, set/overhead pass, standing spike, jumping spike and block) are presented, along with principles of biomechanics that will help students adjust their movements appropriately to get maximum effectiveness. Direct instruction on giving and receiving feedback not only helps make students responsible for helping each other learn, but also provides students with a valuable life skill. Instruction in the seven volleyball skills are supplemented by full-color 11”x17” posters that are also available for purchase.
