Sponsorship Information

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Team?
Each team consists of one mentor and one mentee who are already matched in a Mentor Michigan based organization. Thousands of these teams exist in Michigan. Mentor/mentee teams are monitored by a caseworker and adults have had background checks. Many corporations have mentoring programs and may want to sponsor a team from their own program.

How does this program support Michigan’s youth?
Funds provided by sponsors will do three things: 1) support mentoring teams and cover all the costs associated with training and the trip to Detroit, 2) support quality physical education curriculum for all Michigan students, and 3) provide healthy lifestyles support to Mentor Michigan participants.

When will the teams be selected?
The Michigan Community Service Commission will provide information about Mentoring: A Running Start to mentors and mentees in programs throughout Michigan. Mentors/mentees have until April 7, 2008 at 5 p.m. to apply. Announcements of selected teams will be made on or before April 15, 2008.

What are the benefits for sponsors?
Sponsors will be listed in all news releases about Mentoring: A Running Start. Media representatives will be provided with opportunities to follow teams throughout the summer as they train for the 5K run that is a part of the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon.

Sponsors and mentor teams will also be listed in the Governor’s Council yearbook highlighting Michigan running events including all runners involved in the Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Run, and on the Governor’s Council Web site at www.michiganfitness.org.
