What is The Detroit Greenways Coalition?
The Detroit Greenways Coalition is a group of stakeholders and city officials that meets monthly and promotes greenway development within the city. This Coalition has developed a Detroit Greenway Vision which calls for over 70 miles of greenways throughout the city. That vision also includes bike lanes to bridge gaps between the greenways and to connect with neighborhoods. These bike lanes are a subset of the over 400 miles of bike lanes proposed within the Detroit Non-Motorized Transportation Master Plan.
In addition to providing technical assistance to greenway projects, the Detroit Greenways Coalition has worked with city officials to develop a Complete Streets Policy to facilitate nonmotorized development. The group has also promoted awareness of bicycling opportunities throughout the City through several bicycle events, such as one-day tours and the establishment of an earn-a-bike program for neighborhood youth.
