Wayne County Parks Family Fun and Fitness Day
May 1, 1999
Wayne County Parks, Sports Authority, Rollerblade, Detroit In-line Skate School, Get
Active Detroit, and Westland Parks and Recreation are sponsoring this event at Hines
Park-Nankin Mills Area in Westland. The event will honor National Fitness Day and
the grand opening of Saturday in the Park, a Wayne County program. The day
will feature guest lecturers on health, fitness, safety-related issues, and interactive
leisure activities and demonstrations. There will be exhibitors, entertainment for
youth and adults, and inflatable rides. The entire event is free.

Detroit Public Schools Pentathlon
May 1, 1999
The Pentathlon is a five-event fitness meet for elementary- and middle school-age
children. The Pentathlon gives each student an opportunity to win a gold, bronze, or
silver personal medal; all participants receive certificates. One banner is awarded
to an elementary and middle school that demonstrates outstanding good sportsmanship at the
event.

Metro Detroit Youth Day
July 14, 1999
Metro Detroit Youth Day was formed in 1982 in an effort to build better relationships
between the community and the private sector. The main goal is to bring together
metro Detroit area youngsters from all walks of life for a day of fun and constructive
activities, and to show youngsters business people, the community, and the food industry
care about them. Thanks to corporate sponsors, 10 or more college scholarships can
now be granted to deserving youngsters.

Bayfront Wellness Cup
August 7, 1999
A family event sponsored by Northern Michigan Hospital, the Bayfront Wellness Cup features
a one-mile non-competitive run/walk, a 5K non-competitive walk, a 5K competitive run, and
a 10K competitive run. To promote non-competitive family fun, all one-mile race
participants and 5K walkers will receive a ribbon. All events begin at the Petoskey
Bayfront Park and follow a paved trail along Little Traverse Bay.

"Born to be Fit" Fitness Carnival
August 7, 1999
Held at the Cannon Recreation Center, 5020 Cadieux, the carnival is a one-day physical
activity and health promotion activity. The primary goal is to promote exercise as a
family leisure activity. The event provides a variety of opportunities for youth and
adults to participate in physical activity, stress reduction activities, and health
screening activities. Activities include a three-mile walk, rollerblading, mini
massages, double Dutch jump rope, and blood pressure screenings.

Mud Creek Crawl
September 11, 1999
The Midland County Parks and Recreation Department sponsors the Mud Creek Crawl, which has
both 5K and 10K running/walking races. The goal of the Mud Creek Crawl is to provide
an opportunity for social, recreational competitions.

Women of Color Conference
September 11, 1999
The American Heart Association, Michigan Department of Community Health, and the Get
Active Detroit Fitness Council are hosting a conference for women of color at Cobo Hall in
Detroit. The goal is to improve the health status of metro Detroit women by
encouraging them, their families, and communities to take the initiative to improve and
safeguard their health on an ongoing basis by establishing lifelong healthy habits.

4th Annual Detroit-Windsor International Terry Fox Run
September 19, 1999
Two events are scheduled: 1) an 8K run that begins at Fiesta Gardens in Mexicantown,
Detroit, and crosses the Ambassador Bridge to finish in Malden Park, Windsor; and 2) a 5K
family event held entirely in Malden Park, Windsor. The event raises awareness and
money for innovative cancer research. The funds are used by the National Cancer
Institute of Canada and the Karmanos Cancer Institute to further research into early
detection, treatment, and cures for all cancers.

Shugars Run for Kids
September 25, 1999
Held at Fort Custer Recreation Area in Augusta, the event includes 5K and 10K runs and a
5K walk; the event raises money for needy children and their families for their health

Fenton Health and Recreation Fair
October 2, 1999
Sponsored by the Fenton Area Chamber of Commerce, Citizens Bank, and McLaren Hospital, the
Health and Recreation Fair is an expo-style health and recreation fair for all ages.
There will be health- and recreation-focused events, demonstrations, and displays.
The goal of the event is to promote health and recreation in the Fenton area.

Parade of Races
October 2, 1999
The Detroit Public Schools is sponsoring the Parade of Races, with nine running/walking
events total. Five of these events will be competitive, while the remainder will be
for fun and exercise. The Parade of Races is a fundraiser for the Student
Motivational Program in the Detroit Public Schools.

Kids' Night of the Stars
October 5, 1999
Young children, ages 5 to 6, stay overnight in a secured, supervised, safe football field.
They are physically active and learn about proper health and health lifestyles from
teachers and high school athletic "stars." Kids' Night is a fundraiser for
its sponsoring organization, the East Grand Rapids Schools Foundation.

Wayne State University 5K Kick-Off Run
October 9, 1999
The 5K run/walk serves as a kick-off to Wayne State University's Homecoming celebration.
Registration takes place from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. on the Wayne State stadium track
The 5K starts at 9:30 a.m., with a one-mile run starting at 9:10 a.m. Awards
will be given to the first five males and first five females in the 5K walk. Early
registration fees (before October 2) are $12 for the 5K and $8 for the one-mile run.
Late registration fees, accepted only the day of the race, are $15 for the 5K and
$8 for the one-mile run.

Sista Strut
October 16, 1999
Sponsored by MIX 92.3 (WMXD FM), Ford Motor Company, D.O.C., and Coca-Cola, the Sista
Strut is a 2.5-mile neighborhood walk designed to increase awareness of breast cancer
throughout the African-American community. Immediately following the walk a brief
informational rally will take place.

Fit Into the Next Millennium
November 15, 1999
The Worksite and Community Health Promotion (WCHP) Program of the Saginaw Department of
Community Health, and WCHP vendors, are sponsoring a community event offering an
opportunity to try a variety of low-impact physical activities. The goal is to
encourage sedentary or occasionally active people to become more active by finding an
activity they enjoy and can perform for 30 minutes a day as recommended by the U.S.
Surgeon General. A free fitness assessment will also be available for anyone over
age 18 who wants to know their current fitness level.
