Legislative Initiatives

Legislative Initiatives – Policy Work for a Healthier Michigan

We are engaged in policy work at the state and federal levels in support of health, fitness, nutrition, active transportation and other related initiatives. We drive nutrition and active living policy, programming, planning and design to inspire environmental change and behavior change for improved health. Our focus is on promoting positive policy and environmental change to support healthy, active living.

Our advocacy work encompasses:

  • Meeting face to face with state legislators and members of Congress
  • Testifying on specific bills before key legislative committees
  • Providing evidence based and data driven educational materials to lawmakers
  • Taking steps to secure dedicated funding for public health programs that address chronic disease prevention
  • Striving for increased federal funding for Safe Routes to School and Transportation Enhancements
  • Advocating for federal reauthorization of SNAP and SNAP-Ed funding
  • Working collaboratively with those supporting state and/or federal legislation related to quality physical education programs in schools
  • Monitoring and advocating for transportation policy that supports walkable, bikeable, accessible communities
  • Providing leadership and working collaboratively with the Healthy Kids, Healthy Michigan Coalition to reduce childhood obesity in Michigan
