The Pure Michigan FITness Series is a new program that builds off the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports Endorsement Program.

The Pure Michigan FITness Series is attempting to redefine fitness by creating a network of physical activity events throughout Michigan that are accessible to all Michigan residents. The goal of the series is to connect organizations that support health and wellness opportunities for their community with the resources and tools of Pure Michigan FIT.

Nearly a dime out of every medicare dollar is due to physical inactivity

To encourage physical activity and foster community, the Pure Michigan FITness Series endorses local, regional and state events that are consistent with the Council’s mission to Get Michigan on its Feet. The Pure Michigan FITness Series encourages physical activity events that provide opportunities for all ages and skill levels to compete. The program currently endorses more than 400 events, reaching nearly 400,000 participants.

Living a physically active life can yield long-term health benefits and individuals who are physically active experience lower rates of heart disease, stroke, obesity, certain types of cancer, osteoporosis and depression.

Having an event endorsed under the Pure Michigan FITness Series is easy. Any organization hosting a physical activity event is eligible to submit an endorsement application. The review committee will consider application criteria related to the safety and well being of participants, qualifications of event organizers and officials, proper emergency procedures and maximum participation opportunities.

An added benefit for those individuals participating in an event endorsed by the Pure Michigan FITness Series is that they are eligible to enter the lottery for the annual Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Run.

The Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports is working to Get Michigan Back on Its Feet by promoting the health benefits of physical activity and creating behavior-changing programs that equip Michigan citizens to lead physically active lifestyles. Those who are physically active experience lower rates of health problems such as heart disease, stroke or obesity compared to those who are inactive. Not only will you be healthier, you will also feel healthier and be more engaged in your local community.

To this end, the Governor’s Council created the Pure Michigan FITness Series, a program that endorses local, regional and state events that are consistent with the Council’s mission to promote healthy choices while offering a physical activity event that is open to all participants, regardless of skill level or age. The event review committee considers application criteria related to the safety and well-being of participants, qualifications of event organizers and officials, proper emergency procedures and maximum participation opportunities.

An endorsement from the Pure Michigan FITness Series gives each event the Governor’s Council’s seal of approval, and allows the event to use the Pure Michigan FITness Series logo for promotional materials.  The Pure Michigan FITness Series also provides resources for event directors and participants to promote and improve the overall experience of their events as well as to learn more about healthy living activities. In addition, event organizers will be connected to the Pure Michigan FIT network, which offers additional resources and opportunities.

If you are an event organizer and would like to submit your event for consideration, you can now submit your application online. If you have questions, or to instead submit a paper application, please contact Tricia Fraas at tfraas@michiganfitness.org or (517) 347-7891.

The endorsement committee will review your application, assess your event based on the criteria listed, and determine its eligibility. You will be notified within 2-3 weeks of your application whether your event qualifies.
