Walk to School Day is celebrated on the first Wednesday of October every year.
In the United States, Walk to School Day was started in Chicago in 1997, and became International Walk to School Day in 2000.
In Michigan, hundreds of schools and thousands of children participate every year, with many schools planning special events to tie in with the statewide student count day.
Bike to School Day
Following the success of Walk to School Day and increasing interest from bicycling students, the first National Bike to School Day was created in May of 2012. These are both great introductions to Safe Routes to School, and can be the seminal point for a successful program.
