Walk to School Day

Walk to School Day

On Wednesday, October 3, Michigan Fitness Foundation’s Safe Routes to School Program celebrated National Walk to School Day.

Every October thousands of students, parents and volunteers walk and bike to school in celebration of International Walk to School Month. Walk to School Day is an annual event celebrated in more than 40 countries worldwide. The hands-on program is a fun way to encourage physical fitness and promote the health benefits of walking, while working to build connections between families and schools to improve walking routes and infrastructure in the broader community.

This year the Safe Routes to School team lead featured events in the communities of Holt at Horizon Elementary, Detroit at Bennett Elementary and in Flint at Durant Tuuri Mott Elementary School. In addition to these events, 220 schools in Michigan and approximately 4,000 U.S. schools celebrated Walk to School Day and Month. The theme for the 2012 Walk to School Day events was "Walking to School Counts in Many Ways."

Thank you to all of our registered Michigan schools for celebrating Walk to School Day with us! To view a list of registered schools or to host an event in your community visit the Michigan Safe Routes to School website.
