Who is in your community?

During the month of May, there are a number of communities that I am reminded to be appreciative of.

  • I think of Mothers and women who do so much for their families and communities that they are a part of.  Mothers do so much for all of us and can be a positive role model of physical activity for their family. Happy Mother’s Day on May 8, 2016! Set an example and be active.
  • I think of nurses and the positive impact they have on their health care community.  Let’s celebrate the nursing community and wish them a Happy Nurses Week, May 6-12, 2016.  Nurses keep the health care system healthy and show us all how to care.  How do you show your community how you care?
  • I think of teachers and the role they play related to educating and teaching. Thank a teacher during Teacher Appreciation Week, May 2-6, 2016.  What have you learned about health and wellness from a teacher?
  • I think about my small, rural community of St. Johns and what a great place it is to live, work and play.  We recently promoted Michigan Fitness Foundation’s Bike and Walk to School Day.  The community came alive, as one parent said.  It was great to see so many organizations within our community supporting this active and healthy lifestyle event.  How do you show your community your support for a healthy lifestyle?
  • I also think of all the men and women who give us the freedom to be a part of great communities.  May we honor and remember those who gave us this freedom on Memorial Day 2016.
  • Finally, I think of my fitness community, whether it’s my running group, my cycling friends or other individuals I meet who can talk fitness with me.

We all need to feel like we belong and share common interests.  So I encourage you today and every day to find a community of like-minded individuals and go out and make a difference.
